AURORA COLORADO FRONT YARD LANDSCAPE RENOVATION
Karen Pirello and her daughter Mary were dealing with a front porch. It was unlivable becused of cracked and sinking concrete. The front porch area was plagued by multiple styles of hardscape materials that were packed around an old concrete pad. The front lawn soil was so poor that grass would grow, even with tons of water. Karen had the soil tested by the University of Colorado. They confirmed what she already suspected, the soil was completely dead.
To compensate Mary had placed small boulders, several plants, and a few trees around the yard. With that intention they knew their front hard had potential and could become a beautiful and usable outdoor space. If they only had a plan.
After seeing our ad in The Home Mag, Karen reached out. Matt Merki, one of our Landscape Imagmineers, talked with Karen and booked an initial free consultation. Matt listened to their cares and design ideas and offered to come back with a plan that answered all their questions and concerns. A design that put on paper what Karen and her family had in mind.
THE DESIGN PROCESS
The plan presented was exactly what they had in mind. The next step was to answer their questions, tweak the plan and consider the construction phase.
Creating a new outdoor environment in their front yard is exactly what Karen and her family really wanted.
I wanted a real lawn, a place where I could sit and watch the sunset. A little piece of the mountains in my front yard. An environment that would welcome pollinators and birds. I knew I had the basics for all those things in our yard, I just didn’t know how to get it accomplished.
Karen Pirello
After walking the front and back yard with Matt the Pirello’s determined their design priorities and how best to work within their budget. Considering the overall scope of landscape renovation it was decided to phase the project over two years. This year would focus on the front yard.
In addition to the aesthetics there were functional aspects, like the cracked front entry steps and the disconnected front entry pillar that needed to be addressed. Karen and her family landed on the idea of creating an expansive front porch area. Walkways that provided easy access to the home’s entry as well as access between the front and backyards were planned. The environment was also carefully considered, reducing the lawn area to reduce water use. Accenting the mature trees creating a more engaging outdoor living experience, were extremely important to Karen and her family.
When Matt came and we were explaining our design ideas, we weren’t really sure what we even wanted, but we gave him the general ideas of the layout and what we would like to see with grass and rocks and plants. And he took what we had in our brain and was able to get it into reality and make it a beautiful end design that we didn’t even know could exist.

CONSTRUCTION
The Pirello’s were happy with the speed and quality of the construction. Additions and minor changes to the design were incorporated during construction but that did not slow down the project. The complete design and renovation of their front yard outdoor living space was completed in two weeks from beginning to end.
The work included an expansive new porch, pathway to the back, moving a gate, bringing in tons of boulders, enhanced soil, new sod, new trees, irrigation, outdoor lighting and more.
And the crew who came here every day and worked, they were so skilled. They were courteous. They were hard workers, Pepe, Ezechiel, Omar, just great guys, just great guys! They did wonderful work for us.
